Do referees get paid per game?
With 17 weeks in the NFL regular season, a referee would make $12,058.82 per NFL game. That’s just the base salary and doesn’t even include preseason games or the hefty bonus checks game officials receive for working during postseason football games, too. Referees get hefty pension plans as well. 5
What value do you gain in officiating a game?

Is a referee an employee?
The referee is a worker (self-employed) and not an employee. In Professional Game Match Officials Limited v HMRC [2018] TC06698, the First Tier Tribunal (FTT) found that football referees were self-employed.
Can referees deduct mileage?
If you use your auto for officiating purposes, which most officials do, you may be able to deduct the expenses related to the operation of the auto. Deductions can be computed using the standard mileage rate or actual expenses. Both methods rely on accurate documentation of the number of miles driven for business.
Are referees considered employees?
As stated previously, the most common legal explanation for giving referees and umpires independent contractor status is that officials – and not a school employee, YMCA administrator or recreation director – have the right to control games.
